Bite planes, also known as dental splints, are devices used to correct problems like 'deep-bite'. This condition is characterized by excessive overlapping of the lower teeth by the upper front teeth. Usually, anything more than a 20-percent overlap is considered a 'deep-bite'. When you have this problem, most of the lower front teeth cannot be seen when smiling. 'deep-bite' can cause severe crowding of the lower teeth, as well as causing them to cut into the roof of the mouth. Bite planes can help correct this problem by placing the T-M-J 'joint' ina more comfortable position. Bite planes are made of acrylic and wire and usually are removable, but need to be worn at all times, even when eating. Sometimes sufferers of t-m-j are prescribed bite planes for their condition. Contact an orthodontist or dentist for more information on bite planes.
