The Clinton School District will have 43 less positions next school year after economic woes and state budget cuts forced district leaders to announce the need for employee layoffs on Thursday.

School Board officials voted in favor of the cuts earlier this week.

In a written statement, Superintendent Dr. Phillip Burchfield says that attempts have been made by the district to keep the budget balanced, including reducing travel, cutting back on new textbooks, and not purchasing new buses.

So far, the district has absorbed $1.7 million in cuts for the 2009-2010 school year and expects to have 15-percent less state funding than during the past two years.

A portion of the 43 eliminated positions, which include librarians, counselors, and classroom teachers, were through unfilled positions that opened when employees retired, moved, or left the district.  The cuts could also result in increased class sizes.

Burchfield says although the choice was difficult, he hopes the district and community will continue to move forward.

"
These personnel decisions were not made lightly, nor were they made quickly. I understand the real impact this has on the lives of everyone involved and the impact it will have on our community," says Burchfield.

"However, we believe that it is better to make these difficult decisions at the local level rather than waiting for the state to make our budget choices for us. We know the needs of each of our schools, and the needs of our students. We believe that local control of budget matters will result in better long-term outcomes for students and employees."
