Former Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians Chief Phillip Martin was laid to rest Monday after he died at UMC last week from stroke complications.  He was 83 years old.

Services were held Monday morning at the Holy Rosary Catholic Church off Highway 19 South in Philadelphia.

Martin died Friday after family members say he was taken to UMC in Jackson for a stroke earlier in the week.  He served as Choctaw Chief for 32 years and was most known for improving economic development in the area by opening two casinos, a golf club and a water park in the state.
