Jackson firefighters say they now know what sparked the blaze that gutted a North Jackson apartment home last week.

Assistant Chief Greg Travis tells FOX 40 News that the fire was caused by unattended cooking in the kitchen of the apartment.  Crews were called to Northside Terrace Apartments on 350 West Northside Drive around 3pm on Friday afternoon after a resident smelled smoke coming from a bottom apartment.  No one was home at the time, but the apartment was a total loss.

The owner of the apartment tells FOX 40 News that she did have renter's insurance.  Fire officials say the top apartment did not suffer any damage, but that owner will not stay in the apartment overnight because of heavy smoke.  Fire officials say the American Red Cross has been assisting the displace residents.
