FROM THE JACKSON MEDICAL MALL:

Mississippi residents, including children, suffer from high rates of obesity, high blood pressure, and strokes.  The state’s infant mortality rate is also rising.  A
Children’s Health Fair, sponsored by the Jackson Medical Mall Foundation, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, and the National Institutes of Health, will disseminate information to combat those health issues.

The fair is scheduled for Thursday, March 11, 2010 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Jackson Medical Mall Thad Cochran Center. This FREE expo will save people hundreds of dollars in medical costs and provide life-saving information for them and their children. This community service event is part of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority’s 78
th South Eastern Regional Conference.

“We are a service-oriented organization, striving to give our community the essential steps they need to live a healthy life,” says South Eastern Regional Director Dr. Juanita Sims Doty.  “As Senior Advisor for Outreach at the National Institute of Child Health & Human Development at the National Institutes of Health, this partnership along with the Jackson Medical Mall Foundation helps us to make sure our children are healthy and have the best health care possible.”

“The screenings provided during the children’s health fair are important components to their overall well-being,” says Primus Wheeler, executive director for the Jackson Medical Mall Foundation.  “We are pleased to be the host and partner in health of this event, which helps to fulfill our mission of providing quality healthcare to the community.”

Doctors, pharmacists, nutritionists, and other health care providers will be on-hand to provide screenings for blood pressure, cholesterol, hearing, vision, cancer awareness, diet, and exercise.  In addition, there will be a
Lunch and Learn seminar that focuses on children’s mental health as well as a SIDS workshop that will take place during the fair.  Walton Elementary School Choir will provide entertainment, along with a puppet show from the University of Mississippi Medical Center.

For additional information, please contact the Jackson Medical Mall Foundation at (601) 982-8467 or Ruby Denson at (601) 317-1908.
