The MDOC inmate accused in last month's murder of well-known white supremacist Richard Barrett could face the death penalty.

During a preliminary hearing in a Rankin County courtroom Tuesday, charges against 22-year-old Vincent McGee were upgraded from murder to capital murder.

Rankin/Madison County District Attorney Michael Guest says the charges were upgraded because McGee had the intent to rob and kill Barrett over a disagreement about money.  After McGee allegedly killed Barrett, officials found that Barrett's wallet had been taken.

Barrett's body was found burned athis rural Pearl home on April 23rd.  An autopsy revealed Barrett hadbeen stabbed 16 times in his neck area.

Investigators say McGee admitted to stabbing Barrett to death during at least three separate interviews, however his explanation as to why he stabbed Barrett has changed each time:

Interview 1...
According to investigators, McGee said he went to Barrett's home the night before to check his Facebook page.  When Barrett made a sexual advance toward him, McGee said he hit and stabbed him.

Interview 2...
McGee told investigators he went to Barrett's home to talk about payment for completed yardwork services, during which they got into an argument.  McGee says that's when Barrett made a sexual advance toward him, after which McGee stabbed him.

Interview 3...
Investigators say McGee's third interview was also slightly different than his first two, admitting that the stabbing was over money, but making no mention of any sexual advances.  McGee also told officials that, after the murder, he put a gun next to Barrett to make investigators think the white supremacist committed suicide.

District Attorney Guest says the next step is for charges to be presented to a grand jury in June and that, if the jury returns an indictment of capital murder, McGee could face the death penalty or life in prison.

Three other suspects are facing charges in connection to the murders, including McGee's stepfather, Alfred Lewis.  Both Lewis and Vickie Dent will also be indicted in June for accessory charges.  Dent's son, Michael--who is facing arson and accessory charges--is scheduled for a preliminary hearing next Tuesday.

Both McGee and Michael Dent are being held at Rankin County Jail without bond.

Meanwhile, Rankin County Sheriff Ronnie Pennington said Vincent Thornton has claimed Barrett's body.  Thornton said he was friends with Barrett and went to the sheriff's department with his attorney.  Pennington said Barrett indicated his wish for Thornton to oversee the body should something happen to him.
