Some local schools aren't releasing school calendars due to pending legislation at the State Capitol that would reduce the number of school days. The Mississippi Senate voted last week on a bill to reduce the number of minimum required school days from 180 to 175 in an effort to save money. Teacher days would be cut from 187 to 182. Teacher furloughs are also included in the bill.

"It's only going to save you on transportation costs and utilities," noted Hinds County School District Spokesman James Mason. "Which in the grand scheme of things really isn't that much each day."

FOX 40 News made calls to several local school districts. Hinds County schools aren't releasing a calendar, yet. School officials might release a tentative one in the next few weeks, but officials haven't made up their minds.

"We're placing higher expectations on our kids, and the thought of doing that in less time is even more challenging," added Mason.

Madison County schools haven't released an official calendar. Superintendent Mike Kent said he's received several phone calls from concerned parents who want to know when their students will start school so they can plan accordingly. Jackson Public Schools, Clinton Public Schools, and Pearl School District have released calendars. Rankin County Schools are crafting a calendar but haven't released an official one.

State leaders say the bill will most likely head to conference where state leaders from both chambers will hash out a compromise before the bill heads to the floor.
