New information about an ongoing FOX 40 News investigation into the Capital City's fire hydrants.
If you see a fire hydrant near you with bright pink, orange or red tape, it means it is not ready to fight fires.
The Jackson Fire Department is conducting its bi-annual tests to make sure the city's fire hydrants are ready to fight fires. However, some hydrants are failing the test.
When fire fighters test water pressure and inspect hydrants, they place bright colored tape around them so they know to go back and address any issues ranging from no water flowing to missing caps.
According to results from the last hydrant check, 230 of the city's more than 6,000 fire hydrants had serious problems. Of that number, more than 40 didn't work at all.
Jackson Assistant Fire Chief R.D. Simpson told FOX 40 News testing the hydrants is a priority, but fixing them is not in their hands.
The tests started this week in fire District 3, or North Jackson. The fire department has until late spring/ early summer to complete testing of all hydrants.
