Governor Haley Barbour acknowledges lost state tax dollars because of aging tax collection software.

Kathy Waterbury, spokeswoman for the state tax collection agency, said the current system could shut down anyday now.  Because of the ailing system, millions of dollars in taxes owed to the state go unreported.

"Here's an example of a chunk of one time money from a legal settlement to pay for a one time expenditure," said Gov. Barbour.

The governor wants to use the $18.5 million from the Eli Lilly settlement to go toward replacing the software.

FOX 40 News has been investigating the state tax commission software for months.  Waterbury with the state tax commission said the system needs replacing and millions of dollars are being lost because of the outdated software.

Waterbury said the agency needs more than $18 million.

"We're estimating based on what other states have done that's going to cost in the neighborhood of $33 million," said Waterbury.

Waterbury said it takes months to bid on a system, and then it takes about two years to build the system to meet the state's needs.

"We do have a crisis situation and we're trying to maintain what we have for as long as we can," said Waterbury.
