(AP) Buck Showalter was hired to manage the Baltimore Orioles on Thursday, his latest rebuilding project in a major league career full of them.

Showalter's first game will be Tuesday night at Camden Yards against the Los Angeles Angels.
Baltimore had the worst record in the majors at 31-70 going into Thursday night against Kansas City and is headed toward its 13th straight losing season. The Orioles fired manager Dave Trembley on June 4 and replaced him on an interim basis with Juan Samuel.

"Buck Showalter's proven track record makes him the right choice for manager of the Orioles," president of baseball operations Andy MacPhail said in a statement. "We believe Buck's extensive experience and expertise will be a major benefit to us as we look towards a more successful future."

Samuel will return to his job as the team's third-base coach. Baltimore went 16-31 with him in charge.
The rest of the Orioles' coaching staff will stay intact. Gary Allenson, the interim third-base coach, will resume his spot as manager at Triple-A Norfolk.

Showalter's move was first reported by ESPN, where he worked as an analyst. His last television appearance was on Monday.

"My job with ESPN allowed me to follow this organization closely over the last several years, and although the current record may seem to indicate otherwise, I see enormous potential with this club," Showalter said in a statement released by the team. "I look forward to the challenge of competing in the American League East. Baltimore is a tremendous baseball town with passion and pride in its club, and my family and I look forward to making it our new home."

Showalter is a two-time AL Manager of the Year, winning the award in 1994 with the New York Yankees and 2004 with Texas. Both times, he had taken over teams and guided their turnarounds.
The 54-year-old Showalter also was the first manager in the history of the Arizona Diamondbacks. He was hired well in advance and given time to put the Diamondbacks in position to contend once they started playing in 1998. He was fired after the 2000 season, and Arizona won the World Series the next year.

They're two of the top rated offensive lineman in Mississippi and Aaron Morris and Justin Bell happen to play on the same o-line. The Callaway seniors are back on the practice field getting ready for the 2010 season. FOX40 stopped by practice Tuesday to get the latest on these two big guys.

Aaron Morris: A dandy-dozen selection, Morris may be the most sought after lineman recruit in the state. Morris holds offers from a ton of schools in the southeast region, including Ole Miss, Mississippi St. and Alabama. There's a lot of talk that Morris will end up at Ole Miss but he says he's wide open right now and has not set a timeline on when he wants to make a decision

Justin Bell: When you walk onto a practice field you can not miss Justin Bell. From the mammoth size to the bouncing dreadlocks, he's quite noticeable. Bell says that he wants to commit either late in August or early September and that the decision is between Ole Miss and Mississippi St.

Check back with my601.com as we'll have recruiting updates on the top prospects throughout the year, and click on the 'Who's Next' on our site to see more on these guys.

Mississippi State head coach Jay Miller and Chelsea Bramlett added yet another piece of hardware to their collection cases as the pair helped the United States Women’s National Softball Team to a successful defense of its World Cup of Softball last weekend in Oklahoma City.

Miller’s squad went 6-1 in the event, with the lone loss coming against Canada Sunday afternoon. Despite that setback, the U.S. advanced to Monday night’s championship game and defeated Japan 5-1 in a rematch of last month’s ISF World Championship gold medal game.

Bramlett played in five games, starting three times. The Cordova, Tenn., native and four-time NFCA First Team All-American hit .500 (3-for-6) with a sacrifice, four runs scored and four stolen bases.

In Thursday’s opener against Canada, a 9-0 win in six innings, Bramlett went 1-for-2 and added a stolen base. The next night she scored a run as the U.S. rolled to a 5-0 win against Japan.

On Saturday the Red, White and Blue held on for a 1-0 win against the U.S. Futures before meeting Japan in the second game of the twinbill. Against Japan, the SEC record-holder for season and career batting average collected a hit and scored twice while swiping a pair of bases.

After adding a sacrifice in Sunday’s setback to Canada, Bramlett went 1-for-3 with a run and a stolen base as the U.S. blanked the futures 3-0 prior to the championship game against Canada.

When the major league draft began last month, Taylor Stark was faced with a truly tough decision. Again Stark said no thank you.

He is passing on the pros to take a scholarship and go play at Mississippi St. Stark said it was too hard to pass up a chance to play SEC baseball and that he has plenty of room to grow before he's ready for his shot at the big leagues.
